The Suffolk University www.suffolk.edu Veterans Upward Bound program funded by the U.S. Department of Education has been created to help qualified military veterans develop the necessary skills to enroll and succeed in postsecondary education. Veterans receive assessment counseling and an individualized education plan. They take courses in mathematics, laboratory science, composition and literature, and foreign language. Veterans may participate in study skills, tutoring, academic and personal counseling, financial aid planning, college application seminars and cultural events as well.
Reporting to the Director of the Office of Academic Access and Opportunity this position is responsible for administration, training, supervision, implementation and evaluation. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the effectiveness of the program and for ensuring the program goals are met. This position is also responsible for budget management, grant writing and reporting. This position develops working relationships with Admissions and the Financial Aid Offices at area higher education institutions to advocate for veteran participants who may be applying for admission. The Associate Director also works with other departments at Suffolk to coordinate services made available to veteran participants. The Associate Director is responsible for formulating and implementing a prescribed individual educational plan for each veteran participant. The Associate Director provides academic advising and academic instructional support that enables program participants to remain in the program; tracks program participants after participation in the program to monitor their educational progress; manages and maintains the participant database. The incumbent conducts evaluation sessions and provides academic college/career counseling. Performs other duties as assigned.
This position is grant funded for 4 years.

Job Requirements
• A Master's degree in Counseling, Education, Secondary Counseling, Social Work or related field.
• Three years of successful professional experience with a demonstrated commitment to working with adult learners and veterans from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation and organizational skills
• Supervisory experience.
• Experience facilitating workshops and trainings
• Strong computer skills
• Experience working with social service agencies, and serving clients with psychiatric problems, or drug and alcohol abuse problems
• Experience working with diverse populations.
• Flexibility to participate and/or attend program- or veterans-related events in the evening or weekends on occasion.
• Military experience is preferred.
• Experience working in veterans' services is preferred.
