The General Counsel of the University of California seeks a Managing Counsel for the Labor, Employment and Benefits group in the Office of the General Counsel in Oakland, California. The position, which reports to the Deputy General Counsel, Litigation, Labor & Employment, will manage six labor, employment and benefits attorneys and will provide advice and counsel to senior management on highly complex legal matters or problems. The successful candidate will keep informed on legislation and case law and benefits matters throughout the UC system and at its ten campuses, five medical centers and a National Laboratory.

Candidates must have a minimum of 12 years’ legal and management experience, proven experience in traditional labor law (PERB and/or NLRB), possess a degree from an accredited law school and be a member in good standing of the California Bar. Candidates should have excellent judgment and proven experience energizing and managing to expectations three or more attorneys specializing in the areas of labor and employment law. The position requires demonstrated communication, negotiation, performance management, client counseling, writing, and analytical skills; an in-depth knowledge of relevant federal and state employment/labor laws, regulations and case law, including, for example: HEERA, NLRA, FEHA, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, CFRA, FLSA, privacy, 1st Amendment and whistleblower issues, etc. and a demonstrated ability to conduct hearings and to work flexibly in a fast-paced, complex higher education environment.
