ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF NONCREDIT AND CREDIT ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
Southwestern College

10-MONTH, TENURE TRACK POSITION
This position may include a combination of day, evening, weekend, extension sites, community sites and online or hybrid assignments.

This is a split assignment between noncredit ESL and credit ESL. The proportion of the load will be dependent upon the college’s need.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Dean of the School of Language, Literature and Humanities and the Dean of Instructional Support Services and Continuing Education, this tenure-track position requires a candidate with the ability to teach ESL students of all levels and leadership experience in a noncredit ESL setting. The basic assignment will consist of teaching credit and noncredit ESL classes, keeping noncredit ESL and credit ESL curriculum current and relevant, and collaborating with faculty and administrators to promote noncredit ESL in the local community and pursue the Adult Education Block Grant (AEBG) efforts as they pertain to ESL at Southwestern College. The candidate will work in collaboration with faculty members in the discipline within existing leadership structures to support the growth and expansion of the noncredit ESL program, participating in collaborations with other institutions, such as local high schools, adult schools, and businesses as well as the ESL Department, CTE faculty, Continuing Education and the Assessment Office in order to bridge adult schools, noncredit and credit ESL at Southwestern College. The candidate should also demonstrate familiarity with English for Academic Purposes and Content-Based Instruction. Active involvement in the ESL Department and on College committees is also required. In sum, the candidate will be the lead faculty member for our growing noncredit ESL program as well as an instructor in our credit ESL program, serving as a liaison and bridge between these two programs. It is the responsibility of the candidate to participate in the design, implementation and evaluation of the noncredit ESL program and courses and the instruction of credit ESL courses which will directly result in the educational growth of and clear pathways for students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis OR Bachelor’s in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND Master’s degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or any foreign language OR possession of a valid California Community College Instructor Credential in ESL OR the equivalent.

Demonstrated success working with students, faculty, and staff of varying backgrounds including sexual orientations and gender expressions as well as varying social, economic, religious, cultural, ideological and ethnic backgrounds, and those with disabilities. Demonstrated success working with historically underrepresented and/or marginalized groups, and underprepared or nontraditional students.

Desired Qualifications and Attributes: Minimum of three years’ experience teaching ESL. Experience working in both noncredit ESL and credit ESL programs in a community college setting. Demonstrated ability to effectively implement current technology as well as innovative methodologies and models in the classroom. Successful recent experience in developing and teaching CTE/Vocational ESL curriculum. Experience in collaborating with various groups to develop curriculum based on workforce trends and needs. Demonstrated consistent desire to work independently, take initiative, be proactive in building relationships, and proactively follow through on projects in which groups from different institutions are involved. Proven ability and experience working well with various groups including, but not limited to, students, staff, faculty, administrators, and internal and external groups. Recent and successful experience leading and coordinating projects in noncredit ESL. Familiarity with Adult Education Block Grant. Proficiency in a language other than English and/or experience learning a language other than English.

Experience working in a community with a similar diversity pattern as is found in the service area for Southwestern College is desirable.

A short teaching demonstration may be required of those invited for an interview.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Upon initial employment, full-time faculty members are placed on the salary schedule based on years of experience and education. The maximum initial placement for experience is Step 6. Faculty members are encouraged to continue their professional development through additional study qualifying them for advancement on the salary schedule.
