Job description:
General Summary:

Serve as a member of the Network and Systems Services (NSS) team collectively responsible for the installation, maintenance and overall technical administration of more than 200 servers and systems running Solaris, Linux, Windows and Novell. Ensure the availability, integrity, security, and reliability of mission critical and other servers/systems that typically serve the whole population or large subpopulations of the campus community.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as an integral member of the NSS team responsible for installing, maintaining, securing and administering more than 200 servers running Solaris, Linux (SUSE, RedHat), Windows and Novell in a 24/7 data center environment.

Support, implement and administer central Storage Area Network (SAN), Network Attached Storage (NAS), Backup/Recovery systems, and storage management systems. Working with team member(s) assigned with primary responsibility for storage systems, allocate storage and administer storage and recovery systems as a routine responsibility. Implement system backup and archival processes consistent with established University practices and methods.

Each team member will typically serve as a technical lead for at least one assigned operating system or storage technology and as a technical backup for a different assigned operating system and/or storage technology.

Install and configure servers and operating systems, install/test/qualify upgrades, apply patches, manage file systems, monitor performance and troubleshoot alerts from commercial, open source, and locally developed monitoring tools.

Maintain and support assigned systems/servers to ensure minimal downtime and loss of productivity and service. Resolve system outages, problems and help desk incidents. Perform system failure analysis and recovery, insuring system integrity and consistency.

Collaborate and communicate effectively with other IT employees such as Application Administrators, Network Engineers and Database Administrators for implementation, design, integration, diagnosis and resolution of complex system problems or issues.

Draft and develop policies, procedures and documentation required to assure appropriate use, support, backup/recovery, security and overall administration of assigned systems/servers.

Participate in overall business continuity planning and support planning efforts for systems and servers. Serve on assigned IT Disaster Recovery and/or University Business continuity committee(s).

Provide general technical support and troubleshooting services. Serve as liaison to client offices, IT personnel and field service personnel as required. Interact directly with customers to negotiate solutions and support IT employee and end user needs.

Provide necessary support to vendors to resolve problems in a timely manner. Oversee vendor software fault resolution. Coordinate and oversee hardware repairs with designated vendor hardware maintenance contractor.

Mentor and train more junior team members and support professional development efforts of other members of the team.

Perform related departmental duties, as required.

Intermediate knowledge of contemporary systems administration principles and best practices, servers and operating systems typically acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field is necessary. Substantial additional relevant work experience may be considered in the absence of the required degree.

A minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in a system administrator role working with at least one of the following operating systems is required: Solaris, Linux, Novell, and Windows Server. Experience with more than one operating system is preferred. Practical experience managing and supporting at least one of the following storage technologies is required: storage area network, network attached storage, iSCSI , remote mirroring, data replication, data de-duplication, encryption, storage virtualization and archiving technologies. Experience managing multiple storage technologies is preferred.

The specific operating system or storage skill set required for each job vacancy shall be included in the job posting to fill whatever skills gap exists within the team.

Demonstrated skills/knowledge/experience with the following are required: Managing and supporting mission critical systems; Writing and utilizing scripting (i.e. shell scripts) or other programming languages to perform and automate routine tasks; Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision both independently AND as a member of a team is required.

Intermediate knowledge and/or applied skills and abilities with the following are required: Systems integration including operating systems, applications, networks, and relational databases are necessary; identifying and resolving software/hardware interface problems; internal operating system technology, computer operations and hardware, systems analysis, systems level programming.

Effective communication, team work and customer service skills are required in order to collaborate with technical and non-technical people.

Knowledge and/or applied skills and abilities in the following areas are preferred: Systems integration including operating systems, applications, networks, and relational databases; Identification and resolution of software/hardware interface problems; Oracle Database technologies and related best practices; Disaster Recovery concepts and best practices; Virtualization/consolidation technologies such as VMWare, Containers, etc; Experience with managing servers that run relational database technologies including Oracle or SQL Server; Experience working within a formal project management methodology.

Knowledge of and experience with any of the following is preferred: Apache, DNS, LDAP, PHP, MySQL, Novell eDirectory, Active Directory, Novell Identity Manager, DHCP, RADIUS, Shibboleth, and enterprise e-mail systems.
