Job description:
Eastern Michigan University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Business. EMU has a strong teaching and research mission consistent with its comprehensive metropolitan university status. The university offers more than 200 graduate and undergraduate programs, including several applied doctoral degrees. With an enrollment of nearly 21,000 students, EMU is nationally recognized for its diverse student body, low ratio of students to faculty (19:1), and commitment to engaging and serving the surrounding southeastern Michigan region. The university employs just under 700 faculty members represented by the American Association of University Professors (EMU-AAUP) along with full-time and part-time lecturers represented by the American Federation of Teachers (EMU-FT). EMU is located in Ypsilanti, Michigan, 7 miles east of Ann Arbor, 40 miles west of Detroit, 45 miles north of Toledo, Ohio, and 20 minutes from the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. For further information, please visit

The AACSB-accredited College of Business serves nearly 2,300 undergraduate and 650 graduate students. One of five colleges at EMU, it employs over 70 tenured and tenure-track faculty members in 12 majors organized into four departments (Accounting and Finance, Computer Information Systems, Management, and Marketing), along with 5 specialty Master's programs and MBA. The College has been recognized every year since 2005 as one of the nation's “Best Business Schools” by The Princeton Review. The mission of the college centers on supporting the economic development of southeastern Michigan by preparing graduates to perform effectively in the global business community. The College develops outstanding business professionals through a rigorous, applied educational experience. Among its signature programs are the Alumni Business Conference, Center for Entrepreneurship, workshops in the Center for Digital Engagement, Futures NOW (student professional development) and the Executive Mentoring program. The college's strong contacts with businesses in Southeast Michigan give EMU students excellent opportunities for learning beyond the classroom through experiences such as internships, co-ops, and full-time job placements. The college is active internationally, especially in China, India, South Korea, and Europe.
Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President, the Dean is the College's chief academic, executive, and fiscal officer and a member of the University's academic leadership team. The Dean will guide the academic and business planning of the College, advocate for its interests within and outside the University, engage and serve the local and regional business and international community, and work to increase the College's national visibility and to secure the resources necessary to fulfill its ambitions.

Candidates for the position must possess:

•        Demonstrated success in providing intellectual and academic leadership within a College of Business for continuous improvement in scholarship, teaching, curricular design and implementation with the use of technologies that produce measurable results consistent with the Mission.
•        Relevant knowledge and experience in effective program and facilities planning and development, budgeting, and administration, typically acquired through increasing levels of experience in higher education positions and/or a distinguished record of management and leadership in the private or public sector.

•        Success in developing and gaining support across departments and the University for innovative and interdisciplinary programs, and procedures that enhance the mission and effectiveness of the college.
Highly desired:
•        Demonstrable expertise and experience that would support the college's leadership position in globalizing educational programs through curricular development, international programming, and recruitment.
•        Record of advancing diversity in the recruitment, retention, and development of high-quality faculty, staff, and students.
•        Demonstrated success fostering local economic development, innovation, and entrepreneurship efforts.
•        Success in building collaborations and support for active student groups within the college.
•        Promotion of academic freedom, shared governance, and faculty and staff input by working successfully within collective-bargaining agreements and supporting our dedicated faculty to balance teaching and research to prepare students with relevant skills and real world awareness.
