Job description:
Founded in 1850, Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU) is an independent, residential, Liberal Arts University with roughly 1,600 students. The University’s Division of Student Affairs invites applications for the Director of the Office of Residential Life (ORL). ORL is a dynamic department whose broad goal is to provide an exceptional residential experience for students. ORL’s core values include diversity, warmth, learning, sustainability, and fun; these values are exhibited through the co-curricular programs and community building activities that take place within the residence halls and in the campus community. Professional staff members within ORL are expected to practice principals of social justice and inclusion in working in an office that serves students from different racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, and who have various sexual orientations, genders, gender identities, and ability statuses. With the goal of growing the capacity of our residential program, IWU is seeking a student-centered professional committed to promoting and enhancing diversity in every aspect of the residential experience. In leading the Office of Residential Life, the Director’s broad position duties will include:

•        Establishing a strategic direction for the department that focuses on the student learning and supports institutional goals for retention, persistence, diversity, and sustainability.
•        Recruiting, selecting, training, supervising, 4 master’s degree and 2 support staff professionals.
•        Overseeing the recruitment, selection, training, evaluation, and leadership development of over 90 residential life student staff including resident assistants and desk aides.
•        Ensuring staff is properly trained on emergency policies and procedures (including on call procedures) while assuring the institution follows applicable laws and requirements by federal, state, and local authorities that pertain to the residence life program.
•        Working strategically with diverse colleagues, students, and community members.
Skills:
Basic Qualifications:

•        Master’s degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field.
•        Minimum of 5 years of post-masters related professional experience demonstrating progressive responsibilities.

Other Required Qualifications:
•        A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity in previous and current positions.
•        Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred/Special Qualifications:
•        Strong supervisory and mentoring skills
•        Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
