General Summary

Eastern Michigan University (EMU) invites nominations and applications for the position of Senior International Officer (SIO). Located minutes from Ann Arbor, the University offers more than 200 majors in five colleges, and recently completed a $90 million science complex - one of the largest public construction projects in the state of Michigan. The University has successfully worked to offer the lowest tuition increases made by any of Michigan's 15 public institutions for the past six years.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The Senior International Officer (SIO) will provide vision and leadership for the Global Engagement Center (GEC) and lead Eastern Michigan University's international initiatives. The SIO will foster coordination and support for Eastern Michigan University's international and global programs and activities within Academic and Student Affairs. In collaboration with the Global Engagement Council, the SIO will engage in strategic planning for the Center and internationalization of the student experience.

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President, the SIO is the Division's chief executive for international and global programs and activities and is a member of the University's academic leadership team. The SIO will act as a liaison between administrative units and academic departments for the development and sharing of international interests and expertise; engage and serve the local and regional educational community; and work to increase the University's national and international visibility.

Other principal responsibilities:
        Monitor and disseminate information about trends in international and global issues and international education to the University community
        Collaborate with faculty, students, and community groups to promote international education programs and events
        Establish and maintain partnerships with institutes of higher education and organizations abroad
        Manage the operating budget, and seek and secure external funding for international initiatives
        Coordinate and communicate the efforts of University offices engaged in international activities
        Collaborate with Enrollment Management to recruit and enroll international students

        Doctorate or terminal degree in an academic discipline, with a demonstrated commitment to an international/global focus.
        Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to serve as the University's representative and spokesperson in a variety of venues.
        Strong intercultural communication skills, and the ability to work within diverse cultural contexts.
        Success working across an institution to develop and build innovative programs to anticipate and address the changing needs of a diverse international community.
        Outstanding strategic management and planning skills, including the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
        Significant experience with and understanding of academic administration, finances and processes; skill in synthesizing, blending, and balancing competing ideas and goals to arrive at a common purpose.
        Desired qualifications include: experience living, studying, teaching, and conducting research abroad; experience leading study abroad programs and/or domestic programs for international students; and fluency or strong proficiency in one or more world languages.

The successful candidate will serve a twelve-month appointment. A competitive salary will be based on qualifications and prior experience with a tenure track appointment at the full professor rank.
