Job Summary

The Clinical Nurse Specialist for the UCSF Adult Cardiac Cath Lab requires expertise in the evidence-based nursing care of this specialty in Cardiology. The Nurse Specialist is a nurse who, as a result of advanced education and in-depth clinical knowledge, possess the skills necessary to provide expert comprehensive care coordination for this clinically complex patient population. The nurse specialist is a clinical nurse leader and facilitates collaboration for complex patient care, with an emphasis on education, nursing assessment and processes to address the needs of all of the cardiovascular and transplant patients who come through the cath lab for procedures.

Utilizes specialized knowledge and skills within major areas of chronic care management related to this specific subspecialty of Cardiology, including triage, patient education, establishing clinical protocols, writing policies and procedures, education and training of nurses, fellows, and APPs in the care of patients with various types of cardiovascular disease, while working in a multi-disciplinary setting with all staff in this healthcare system. Typically partners with the practice level and additional nurse leaders in leading the nursing clinical practice areas. This is the journey level for an advanced practice clinical nurse specialist.

This role will work collaboratively with all staff, Advanced Practice Providers and Physicians to assess and coordinate the care of these complex patients. This position is the multidisciplinary resource and nursing leader for this patient population referred to the cath lab for procedures, with a primary focus on the management of outpatient procedures. Supports and participates in clinical research as appropriate and quality improvement in the cath lab including patients having structural heart procedures. Provides leadership and program development in this rapidly advancing and innovative subspecialty within Cardiology.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.


For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Cardiac Cath Lab

UCSF adult cardiac catheterization performs close to 2,500 procedures per year, about half of them being planned outpatients. The department performs all diagnostic heart catheterization procedures including biopsies, left and right heart catheterizations, as well as stent procedures and advanced structural heart and congenital heart procedures. We also participate in several ongoing trials for new techniques and devices.




  • In-depth knowledge of one or more cardiology specialty areas, to include diagnoses, treatments, standards of practice and patient / family educational consulting and resources.

  • Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess highly-complex issues and develop multiple options for resolution.

  • Advanced interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide education, training, and direction to nursing staff, and to develop positive working relationships with patients, families, employees, and outside agencies as required.

  • Advanced skills in written and verbal communications, with the ability to convey complex and /or sensitive information in a clear and concise manner.

  • Minimum three (3) years of recent clinical experience in the management of cardiac patients; preferably in Adult Interventional Cardiac Catheterization & Interventional laboratories, Cardiac ICU or acute care cardiac.






  • Experience in outpatient patient management that may have included clinical triage, post-procedure symptom management, and/or medication reconciliation.

  • Experience writing/updating clinical protocols in conjunction with physician and nursing partners.

  • Experience leading quality improvement projects using patient data and analysis.



License/Certifi cation


  • Master’s Degree in nursing or other related field

  • Current California RN license

  • Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist, preferable in a cardiovascular discipline
