The Library Technology Services (LTS) team at Harvard University is seeking an inquisitive and motivated Senior Digital Library Software Engineer (SDLSE) to help us design, build, and deploy state-of-the-art services for ensuring the Harvard Library delivers on its mission of supporting world-class research and teaching at Harvard. This SDLSE will be responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of library applications and infrastructure within LTS. They will be capable of engaging with projects of varying sizes at any stage in the software lifecycle.
The SDLSE will collaborate with cross-functional teams across all phases of software projects including requirements analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance. They will provide experienced leadership in the design and development of comprehensive, innovative, and integrated solutions.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
• Collaborate with software and operations engineering teams to define and build applications and infrastructure that support the mission of the Harvard Library
• Write well-designed, testable code
• Produce specifications and determine operational feasibility
• Integrate software components into a fully functional software system
• Maintain system stability while facilitating a steady flow of software updates and feature deployments
• Support system and software testing and debugging
• Integrate cloud-based resources and networks with local and distributed infrastructure
Typical Core Duties:
• Participate fully in software development life cycle
• Research, design, and implement technical solutions to deliver business requirements
• Identify opportunities to improve and simplify applications portfolio and implement related enhancements
• Contribute to creation and maturing of software development best practices and new technologies
• Draw on relationship and technical skills to act as technical liaison to internal and external clients and to mentor junior staff
• Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct
Basic Qualifications
• Minimum of five years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills

• Highly specialized knowledge developing applications in Python and/or Node.js
• 5 years work experience as a Software Engineer
• Knowledge of information technology applications, processes, software, and equipment
• Demonstrated team performance skills, service mindset approach, and the ability to act as a trusted advisor
Certificates and Licenses
• Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred

Working Conditions
HUIT actively supports hybrid work where business needs allow. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA).
Travel to campus may be necessary based on business needs and the nature of work. Examples include bi-annual or quarterly Town Halls, critical business meetings or other work events. There will be times when being on campus is expected and advance notice will be provided. Additional detail will be discussed during the interview process.
