This position is a two-year fellowship sponsored by the FAO Schwarz Family Foundation and is designed for recent college graduates who aspire to be future leaders in the education and youth development field. The goal is to provide Fellows with experiences, training and mentorship to help them succeed in these fields.
Boston Children’s Museum seeks a dynamic, fun-loving individual with strong leadership and coaching skills, a commitment to Museum education, and experience designing dynamic, engaging children’s health, fitness and nutrition programs. The Health & Fitness Program Fellow is responsible for working with the Dir. VE&P to develop an annual calendar of children’s events to encourage kids and their families to lead active, healthy lives. These will include daily activities within existing exhibits for the general public, complements to the cultural, music, science and Early Childhood events at the museum, education programs that support the Massachusetts state learning standards for school groups, twelve annual health fairs at the Museum for families, and outreach programs to be conducted in community settings in collaboration with our Community Learning Center Manager, Educator and Teen Ambassadors. This position will play a key role in establishing the Museum as a leader in children’s health, fitness and nutrition programming and our collaboration with the research and medical facilities in the city. The position also plays a key role in meeting the Museum’s goal of being the best possible urban children’s museum by designing programs, events and celebrations that reflect Greater Boston’s changing demographics.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· BA/BS with background in children’s health, fitness training, coaching, and/or nutrition
· Knowledge of current research and national trends in children’s health and nutrition issues
· Ability to conceptualize, develop and implement short- and long-range program plans
· A solid grounding in the theory and practice of hands-on, inquiry-based museum education programs
· An understanding of best practices in health, fitness and nutrition programs for varied age groups
· A thorough understanding of children’s emotional, intellectual, and social development from birth to age 10
· Excellent communication skills - both oral and written
· Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to interact effectively with a variety of people from different backgrounds and cultures
· Ability to prioritize multiple demands and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
· Ability to manage and motivate staff and knowledge of customer service principles
· Must be self-directed, highly organized, creative problem-solver with excellent follow-through
· Museum experience preferred.
· Fluency in Spanish, Creole, or other languages desirable
HOURS: Regular schedule is Monday-Thursday, 9-5pm, Friday 1pm-9pm. Occasional weekend, evening, school vacation, and holiday hours are required.
