Data Analytics and Research Consultant

Penn State World Campus has an exciting job opportunity for a bright, self-motivated individual who is interested in working in a collaborative, productive, and diverse team environment as a Data Analytics and Research Consultant. Outreach Analytics and Reporting supports Outreach and Online Education by leveraging diverse expertise to collaboratively and responsibly provide data insights that inform decisions and influence actions benefiting students and improving the organization. The team serves as the primary source of operational student reporting and institutional research for the World Campus at Penn State University.

As a member of the Outreach Analytics and Reporting unit, this position will work with a talented team of institutional research and data analytics professionals. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience turning data into knowledge for a wide variety of audiences and providing recommended actions based on this knowledge.

The Data Analytics and Research Consultant will:

Support Penn State World Campus by establishing processes and procedures for extracting, compiling, analyzing, and presenting data relevant to supporting prospective student conversion and longitudinal student success.
Collaborate with stakeholders and leadership to identify and prioritize reporting needs.
Lead retrieval and analysis of data from multiple sources to track progress of key organizational performance indicators.
Prepare reports and dashboards that present complex data analyses to assist key stakeholders in making decisions.
Compare consistency of data against other data sources and apply stringent QA processes to ensure accuracy.
Establish automated procedures for recurring reporting and dashboards.
Utilize project management skills within a collaborative team environment in support of complex data analytical projects.
Build analytic capabilities with other team members and stakeholders through guidance, consultation, and training.
Present results of operational research projects within the University and at external conferences.

This job will be filled as a level 3 or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's education and experience. The ideal candidate will have the following experience:

Experience working with large, complex data sets retrieved from a data repository.
Advanced proficiency in query writing using SQL or Microsoft Access, and Excel skills (v-lookup, pivot tables, charts, graphs and macros).
Demonstrated experience in statistical analysis techniques and software programs commonly used in quantitative research (e.g., R, SAS, SPSS) is preferred.
Experience using visualization software (e.g., PowerBI) is preferred.
Knowledge of Penn State systems (PeopleSoft - LionPath, Canvas, Starfish, Campus Nexus) is preferred.
Academic background in business analytics, data analytics, statistics or a related discipline, and two years working in an academic setting using and analyzing student data preferred.

Competencies in the following areas will be required: strong quantitative and analytical skills, proven attention to detail and problem-solving skills, effective organization and project management skills to meet multiple deadlines and attain results, creativity and innovation, excellent verbal and written communications skills, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion.

Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional education and/or experience and competencies are required for higher level jobs. We seek candidates who are able to demonstrate experience and ability to advance Outreach's diversity initiative. A remote working arrangement may be considered for this position if requirements are met.
